Rook the Margrave of House Hesse

Earl of the Twisting Branches

"I'm wrapped in the depths

Of these deeds that have made me

I can't bring a sound

From my head though I try

I can't seem to find My way up from the basement

A demon holds my place

On earth 'til I die" - "Furnace Room Lullaby," Neko Case

Attribute Score Rank
Psyche  11 4th
Strength  -10  4th
Endurance 50 1st
Warfare  4th

Bad stuff: 4

Shapeshift: 10 [alternate form]

  • Human form: Stands at about 6'1" and thin. They are much more durable than they look, maybe it is force of will than pure physicality. Their skin and hair are pale. Their hair could be white-blond or white, or at that level of washed out of color it is nearly a moot point. Their eyes are a yellow-orange amber. They have scars across the right side of their face, most visible across their lips, they apparently acquired these during a fight at school. Currently their hair is long enough to put most of it back in a short ponytail.
  • Demon form: Also stands at about 6' but can be taller or shorter depending on mood. Upper body is solid with blue-black skin. Their chest is open to an ember "heart" the glow from which can be seen through their upper body, mostly through designs upon their skin. They have several arms ending in claw-like hands. Their "hair" and lower body are tendrils of smoke. The lower body tendrils are mostly prehensile while the hair ones are rather dexterous. This form is notably warm to the touch, but they are unlikely to accidentally start fires.

Logrus: 45

  • Imprint: You have assayed the Logrus at least once and survived. This allows you to learn how to use the Logrus.
    • Shadow Walk: Travel freely through Shadow
    • Logrus Sight: Use the Logrus to observe nearby magical energies. Can rack spells on the image of the Logrus if you have Sorcery.
      • Logrus Defense: Use the power of the Logrus to protect yourself from some magical effects.
      • Logrus Tendrils: Manipulate objects and occult energies using extensions of the Logrus.
        • Shadow Molding: Manipulate Shadow stuff, not as effective as Sorcery.
        • Logrus Summoning: Use tendrils to bring a mundane object or creature to you.
          • Summon Primal Chaos: Summon the raw force of Chaos to destroy a local area.
        • Logrus Scrying: Use tendrils to observe a location unseen

Sorcery: 10

  • Magical School: The basics of sensing, analyzing, and manipulating magical energy.

The Jewel of Destiny: 5

  • Imprint
    • Artifact Sight:Free if you possess Logrus sight. Can rack spells if you are appropriately trained in Sorcery.
    • Advanced World Walking: You can travel through shadow more quickly and treat non-shadow realms as though they are Shadow. This includes the Core.

Early Thoughts on Siblings

Lilja: Control

⬥ Even your dislike of me was designed.

Tekhetsio: Thorn

⬥ Can we get past... everything?

Robin: Worry

⬥ We can just... be.

Dantaylion: Caution

⬥ I don't know if I can be the person you think you see.

Harlequin: Responsibility

⬥ You are threading that needle awfully fine.

Growing up with Rook

  • Rook and Crow tried to help Lilja with her horn issue. It did not go according to plan.
  • Rook, as second born, was supposed to be the military child. Lilja stole Rook's primer books and replaced them with similar, but worthless material. Rook started schooling at a disadvantage in this area.
  • Rook found Robin out in Shadow and helped him attune to the blade that had once been Crow's.
  • Harlequin helped Rook out with some mental warding.
  • Which was beneficial when Lilja set up what she thought would be a simple warning system to tell her when Rook arrived home, since they have a bad habit of not using the front door, instead it knocked Rook out cold for a few days.

Some children are just serious, and this describes Rook. Even as a small child they rarely smiled or laughed. When they got older it was rarer still for them to smile or laugh without an edge of malice. For those who didn't know better they would say that Rook was the shadow of Crow. Those that knew better would say Rook was just Crow without the face of social manipulation. Rook was, however, never overtly cruel to their siblings. Casually sharp at worst, unless you provoked them. If provoked Rook's anger was swift and cutting. They would not yell, but would grab the object of their rage with Logrus and then lay into them enthusiastically with the most frightfully cruel words imaginable. In these moments it was very clear that Rook pays attention to the people around them even if they don't seem like they do.

Crow and Rook were very close. They did not have a made up language like some twins might do, but would talk in half sentences and references. The meanings only they really understood. This is how they would talk if they thought they were alone or if they wanted no one else to understand (reserved for rare occasions). They would often lounge against each other like a pair of cats. Creepy or sweet depending on how you wanted to interpret it.

Getting Rook to answer questions has always resulted in frustration. Unless it is questions or topics that interest them Rook answers indirectly at best and seems content to talk circles until the other person interests them or goes away. This may be a key factor in why they got beat up frequently at school. Li may have at least one memory of Rook coming home for holidays with a black eye. Even if it might have been frustrating at least Rook always engaged with their siblings.

Rook did not start going by "they/them" until their mid-teens.

Rook plays the piano and is rather good. Unlike some of of their musically inclined siblings they do not write their own music. Music is the one place where they were most likely to let their guard down and/or seemed happy. Rook has also been a rather thoughtful gift giver, that is when they remembered (or was reminded) to actually give a gift.

Up until Crow's death Rook spent most of their time in Chaos and home. Usually found reading or grudgingly doing whatever courtly duties were required of them. As they got older they did assay the Logrus more than once. Notable in the fact that a person needs a bit of recovery time after doing so to resolve the, hopefully, temporary madness. Some time after Harlequin was born they started spending more time in Chaos again.
